My best, oldest and closest friend is a woman. We met in highschool when we were 15 and 16. Over the years, we had a few drunken hook ups, but they always felt like it was something we ought to do because we were attached to each other's gender and we were strongly attracted to one another. But love is complicated and we realised that just wasn't the kind of love we shared. We're both in our mid thirties now, I'm married and she's getting g married, and we're still both very close. I can't say I see her as a sister, because that doesn't feel right either. She's just that person who sits outside those areas in my mind occupied by friends, family, wife. She's just my person. I wish there was more representation for our kind of relationship, without the expectation that they end up. It's a shame and almost seems childish when people say that's the only road, and we're just kidding ourselves. It feels like telling a kid that's 7ft that he has to be be a professional baller when he doesn't care about sports and just wants to be a software developer.
